While horse over population is a problem, I am not
sure the answer is to stop breeding high quality horses, but
to STOP breeding all but the best quality equines.

Unlike pet over population where most mixed bred
dogs found wandering the streets or even
dogs that do not meet breed standards or those from backyard breeders
are likely to make an excellent family pet, in the equine industry,
horses need to stand up in personality, conformation, bloodlines
and training in order to fit the needs of many involved in
the industry.

However, breeders must be responsible. If last years foals have not sold
this year, do not breed your mares for more foals.
If you cannot afford to put a potential foal through training if
he does not sell, do not breed for future foals.

If you are breeding, try to give back to the animals who give
so much to you by helping rescue horses in need!

Spring 2010
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens

- Proverbs 27:23-27

"I know of no pursuit in which more real and important services can be rendered to any country than by improving its agriculture, its breed of useful animals, and other branches of a husbandman's cares."

- George Washington
