I am starting small this year due to limited funds. I hope next year to encompass the whole back for food. I also hope to become a model for others to do the same. I live in Huntington and everywhere you go there are spots of empty lots in poverty ridden areas where homes have been torn down. Hura owns most of these lots. I would like to be able to work out a deal with them to be able to buy them at a decent price and turn them into neighborhood gardens so residents in the area can become more self sufficient and not so dependent on government assistance. I know this is a lot to hope for but everyone must have a dream and this is one of mine. Since horse slaughter became legal in the US again, California, where I live, is already ramping up these horrible facilities. I, like you. Could only rescue one and he came to me. He was a body weight 2, and will take a year to rehab, the vet says. In his mid twenties. So abused and neglected and yet, so sweet. One at a time. That's more than many other people will do. So, God bless you for having the strength to go that night and to open your heart and home to a horse in need.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06675647895775155523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711494782372304567.post-72530887372689730952012-09-01T00:20:58.094-04:002012-09-01T00:20:58.094-04:00http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTIwH785Ye...http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTIwH785Ye2uGKHJwK1o97o-B2AKT_HhEk2SvjJVu9sCmRkmaPU&t=1 - I would look at Irish Dexters - nothing else - the shelter I've shown is similar to what we use here for them. We had a large garden this summer and canned and ate some.I just put in my fall garden and it is now sprouting. I sell most of my eggs just to pay for the feed and we eat the eggs that are too small to sell. There is no profit except for the nutritional benefits which is very good. I board 4 horses for a family so that is a little extra income that helps. My frustration is that I live on 16 acres and want dairy and beef cows but they are so expensive and I would have to have shelter built for them and have the proper grass sown. I can not afford that or a tractor. How on earth do I begin??? I want to be a home steader soooooo bad!!! I don't mind hard labor but that won't build me shelter for the cows. Everything cost so much money although I'm a very low maintenance person. It was a very difficult life with few, if any, luxuries. There was no eating out, not after-school activities; just work. Day in, day out. A hard scrabble existence. He left the farm at 18 and never looked back. For some reason, I loved to be there, and at my aunts dairy farm.
I too am unsure what category we fit into. I suppose we are what we are; just farmers. No modifier needed. Like your elders, my father think my farm dream is just crazy. I try to explain why we have the type animals we have and why we want to be organic. Monkey business, he says! Maybe I'm a monkey business farmer. The grass IS always greener...especially when it's not trampled by cows, pigs, chickens and goats. ;)
~Mark @ Brooks Mountain Farm~Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01126961644612262267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711494782372304567.post-6621940251733225182011-12-29T12:04:31.405-05:002011-12-29T12:04:31.405-05:00Very nice!! It was the first time I've ever seen them, even though I knew they existed. It was awful. Nothing but mud and cattle squashed up in corners trying to avoid standing in it. And I don't even want to look at battery hens or hoop house broilers- that just makes me cry.

I am a meat eater though, and while I would prefer to raise my own animal proteins, I must admit that it scares me. Just this morning I was contemplating ordering some rock crosses to raise for food this spring...but I am afraid I just wouldn't be able to kill them myself. Not because I would treat them as feathered-kids like I do my layers, but because I just have a hard time taking a life. I don't even like seeing a mouse in a trap even though I know I'd rather it be there than in my cabinet.

Alas, maybe one day I will get the guts to venture out and really be the farmer that my Grandpa was, but until then, I guess I will continue to eat what I am able to buy. :(Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03765047805282601814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711494782372304567.post-91284167774547044892011-09-07T21:35:43.796-04:002011-09-07T21:35:43.796-04:00Those pics of factory raised animals are definitel...Those pics of factory raised animals are definitely hard to look at. Yes, I'm a meat eater and I prefer to raise my own - I even name them. I want to know who to thank for their sacrifice when I bless my food. Over the years I've had many people ask how I could eat something I know. I respond with asking how they can participate in the practice of raising animals caged, filthy, diseased and drugged. And they do participate in it as long as they buy the products from those factories. Thanks for this post.Sandy@American Way Farmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14386748022630293500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711494782372304567.post-16058813718027847432011-08-28T20:44:40.617-04:002011-08-28T20:44:40.617-04:00Thank you for your candid thoughts on the subject!...Thank you for your candid thoughts on the subject! We swore off factory meat several years ago and have no desire to ever go back. We eat way less meat overall and raise some ourselves and get the rest from local sources. So here we remain, stuck with projects that need doing because we've put them off for too long.

Your animals look happy and beautiful, I don't envy you the repairs or the hard work managing your land in rotation to keep it in good shape for them, but it seems you do a great job. I agree that for most families 1 or 2 goats makes more sense than a cow. With 2 goats you can also stagger breeding so that you always have milk available, and with many Saanens you can milk through and breed every 2 years. Also, goat milk is easier to digest and many believe it's actually much healthier than cow milk. My personal favorite is the very personable, although loud, Nubian. It's all a matter of preference.Sandy@American Way Farmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14386748022630293500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711494782372304567.post-65823908959064126042011-06-08T19:25:57.087-04:002011-06-08T19:25:57.087-04:00Oh my gosh I just read this whole page.
